UWI Math Fair 2019: Mathematics in the 21st Century.
The UWI Math Fair 2019 included competitions before the day of the event, a trend that would carry forward to future Fairs. These were the Math Essay, Math Quiz, Math Modelling and Math Talent competitions.
The Math Essay Competition was categorized as follows: Junior (Forms 1 to 3), Intermediate (Forms 4 to 5), and Senior (Form 6). The essays were either expository or argumentative.
The Math Quiz was an online exam consisting of Multiple Choice Questions. The top 6 students from each level in the Math Quiz (Junior, Intermediate and Senior) were selected to compete in the Math Feud competition which was held on the day of the Math Fair.
The Math Modelling Competition was based on the theme, Mathematics in the 21st Century. For the poster, students had to present their findings of an original project, whereas for a model, they would build a physical adaptation of an existing model or concept. They had the opportunity to present their work to the judges on the day of the Fair. More than 30 students participated with the top submission in each category (Junior, Intermediate, Senior) receiving prizes.
The Math Talent Competition was a 2-hour, Olympiad-style exam which tested students' mathematical logic and reasoning skills. It was held during the weekend at two venues. Over 40 students competed, and prizes were awarded for the top 3 performers.
Students were most enthusiastic about the multitude of games and activities available at the fair, and enjoyed the opportunity to socialise and have fun.
